1st October marks the International Day of Older Persons. AGE platform Europe, the largest European network promoting the rights of older persons, has launched the #AgeingEqual campaign to raise awareness against ageism. Lasting 70 days (1st October – 10th December), the 10 week campaign will cover a specific theme each week to illustrate the widespread effect of ageism and how it affects different groups in society.
The campaign is a great reminder that human rights do not diminish with age. Ageism leads to widespread marginalisation, poverty and abuse of older people and has negative impacts on their health and well being. Ageism is everywhere but often it is not taken as serious and harmful as other forms of discrimination.
The #AgeingEqual campaign aims to raise awareness of the magnitude and gravity of ageism then ever before.
