By 2030, there will be almost 13 million people in later life aged 65 or over. The number of people aged 85 and over is expected to more than double between 2014 and 2033, from 1.5 million to 3.5 million, and those aged 65 and over are expected to increase by more than 50%, from 11.4 million to 17.2 million. The Department for Communities and Local Government’s projections state that 74% of all household growth to 2039 will be by those in later life. This will have enormous social and economic consequences for the UK, and housing policy must help to ensure a positive, ambitious future for older people.

Later Life Ambitions welcomes the government’s Housing White Paper, Fixing our broken housing market. We would like to see a change in the way politicians and the public view housing, and for it to be seen in terms of how we best support older people’s ambitions for later life and their contributions to society.
