NARPO – The voice of retired police officers

We are seeking a new Deputy General Secretary to take up this pivotal, leadership role as part of our head office team in Clapham Junction, as early as possible in the New Year.

This role represents an attractive opportunity to advance our work to protect Civil Service pensions and to take a lead in developing our recruitment strategy to help us to attract new members and improve our service offer to around 40,000 existing members.

The role:

You will lead CSPA campaigns on various policy issues, such as the State Pension Triple Lock, Pensioner Taxation and Cost-of-Living, working with the General Secretary and reporting to the Executive Council and its Sub-Committees.

One of the most important purposes of the role is to lead on CSPA’s member recruitment, with the aim of maintaining membership at levels necessary to sustain the organisation’s future.

As the DGS, you will be responsible for member engagement initiatives to encourage active participation in CSPA’s national structures, providing advice and practical support for the network of member volunteers running local groups in England and Wales, working with elected Regional Representatives on the Executive Council.

Other responsibilities cover, supporting the Pension Manager with ad-hoc queries as well as managerial responsibility for the organisation’s governance, overseeing contracts, insurance, GDPR compliance, Health and Safety management and Corporate Risk Management with the support of other team members.

About you:

We are looking for a strong communicator who is comfortable with a range of methods and media and is able to keep members, prospective members, external partners and others informed of the work of CSPA. through innovative communications, including the use of social media.

You should be team orientated and approachable, being able to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment at CSPA Head Office, across the structures of CSPA, and with other partner organisations in the Age Sector.

You will have the ability and a willingness to work with CSPA colleagues, on policy issues and collaboratively seek to improve the administration of the Civil Service Pensions, working with the Cabinet Office, Department of Finance (Northern Ireland) and the pension administrators.

This role would be ideal for someone with experience and understanding of the civil service and/or a union environment. While not essential a knowledge of Civil Service, or Public Sector, and State Pension issues would be advantageous, as well as experience of working in campaigning and membership organisations.

The offer:

This is a full-time, 35 hour a week position, with a starting salary of £57,058 per annum, rising to £60,210 after one year, subject to satisfactory service, and 30 days of paid annual leave allowance, excluding public holidays, plus access to our staff pension scheme.
