The Metropolitan Police Service is seeking Pro-Rata Misconduct Chairs for Misconduct Hearings and Outcomes. These exceptional individuals will serve as partners and will be engaged via a Partnership Agreement, on a self-employed contractor basis.
This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in strengthening public trust, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, and ensuring justice is delivered with integrity. Pro-Rata Misconduct Chairs have a key role in restoring confidence in professional standards and supporting the Commissioner’s mission.
Location: In-person hearings take place at one of the dedicated hearing suites, which are in Southwark, West Brompton, Sutton or on occasion at New Scotland Yard, Westminster or other London locations. You will be required to travel to such places as may be reasonably necessary for the proper performance of your duties.
Time Commitment: Typically, hearings are between the hours of 08:00hrs and 18:00hrs, Monday – Friday. There may be exceptions, when you are required to attend outside of this. While demand is difficult to predict, it is anticipated that you will undertake around 90 days delivery per financial year – although this may be flexible (up and down) depending on demand.
Fees & Expenses: Hourly rate: £75.00. Half day rate (4 hours): £300. Full Day rate (8 hours): £600.
We will cover CPOSA reactive legal expenses insurance cover. There is no provision for any other expenses to be claimed.
About the Role
As a Pro-Rata Misconduct Chair, you will:
- • Chair misconduct and accelerated misconduct hearings under the Police (Conduct) Regulations and Vetting Appeal Meetings under the Police (Vetting) Regulations
- • Ensure processes are fair and transparent and proceedings are delivered in a timely, consistent and legally compliant manner.
- • Work with key stakeholders to ensure more efficient and effective hearings, ultimately improving the standard and timeliness of proceedings.
- • Identify, record and share organisational learning opportunities to support improvement and service delivery.
- • Play a key role in trust and confidence internally and externally around Professional Standards.
- • Support service delivery in conjunction with Tier 1 and Tier 2 Chairs.
- • Act as a role model for integrity, courage, accountability, respect, and empathy and support the Commissioner’s drive to improve standards within the Met.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applications from individuals who:
- • Have retired from policing within the last four years at the rank of Commander/Assistant Chief Constable and above.
- • Have completed the College of Policing’s Chair Training and have experience of chairing hearings.
- • Possess a strong track record in law enforcement, with experience in managing performance and supporting high standards.
- • Demonstrate independence, sound judgement, and a commitment to public service.
- • Are confident in handling sensitive information and making decisions under public, political, and media scrutiny.
- • Ability to analyse information and weigh evidence in order to make findings of fact and reach reasoned decisions.
